FocusStart has advanced to the semifinals of the 2017 MN Cup; a statewide competition among Minnesota-based entrepreneurs, inventors and innovators. The MN Cup is in its thirteenth year, and is giving away a record $450,000 in total prize money.
FocusStart Respiratory is developing a complete inhaled medication management system to improve patient adherence. Poor adherence – not using the inhaler as frequently as prescribed or not using it properly – is the biggest contributor to uncontrolled asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cost the US billions of dollars every year. This innovative health IT solution consists of an inhaler device add-on component that allows communication with smart devices, a patient companion app and a clinician app. The add-on component tracks when/where/how the inhaler is used, and measures inhalation and exhalation; and when used with the companion app, the system provides real-time training for proper inhaler use, and supports proper remote lung function testing.
